After the extraordinary Bastard, hailed as a masterpiece, Dorothy Allison returns as one of the most passionate and talented writers of her generation. And she succeeds with a work that links together, one after another, lyrical, cruel and sublime, a chain of hard-hitting truths: she turns her inquisitive gaze to the story of the women in her family - mother, sister, aunts, cousins and nieces - paying tribute to their strength, their humour and, above all, their stubborn determination in the face of an everyday life that overwhelms them. She also focuses on the men who loved them, who often even abused them, and who, nevertheless, did not stop sharing their destinies. Every few pages, Allison tells us "I'm going to tell you a story" - let's sit back, let's listen to it, the reward comes quickly, unwavering.
