In Early Childhood Education for Every Learner, educator and researcher Bweikia Foster Steen, EdD, reveals the significant positive impact that intentional and inclusive early education (from birth through age 8) based on the Universal Design for Learning (UDL) framework can have in shaping the trajectory of marginalized students. In the book, Dr. Steen underscores a vital truth: the early years are the most critical period of a child's life, and ensuring schools are safe, nurturing spaces for development and learning must be an especially high priority. Yet, barriers rooted in biases and systems of exclusion disproportionately impact racially, ethnically, and otherwise marginalized groups, tragically contributing to what's known as the school-to-prison pipeline. Steen not only illuminates these stark realities but, crucially, offers a powerful, actionable solution empowered by the UDL framework. Envisioning a future full of stimulating instruction and curriculum, Steen provides comprehensive guidance in applying the UDL principles for antiracist results, and demonstrates how the design of high-quality, accessible education can overcome barriers and set students on a path for lifelong success. Early Childhood Education for Every Learner serves as an indispensable roadmap for educators dedicated to creating welcoming environments and fostering growth, guiding them in creating the boundless opportunities for active exploration, meaningful experiences, and profound learning that every child deserves.
