The murders occur to "save" the mulatto children from those marriages; to save them from a future of prejudice from both races. The murderer happens to be a mulatto himself, and he blames his mixed race on the social rejection and his subsequent life of crime. L.A. Just before the storm arrives Jones escapes from jail and a manhunt ensues. Soon they meet and a contest of wills begins, all while the tempest is reeking havoc around them.
