This book provides a comprehensive overview of the present state of environmental perturbations in mangrove ecosystems, with special focus on the Indian Sundarbans, one of the most biologically productive, economically potential, aesthetically celebrated and ecologically sensitive ecosystems in the world. The book highlights the ecological uniqueness of the Indian Sundarbans Mangrove Ecosystem, and covers the socio-ecological impacts that environmental changes have had on biodiversity and the adaptability and resilience of local populations who depend on the environment's ecosystem services. Alongside highlighting the detailed biodiversity status, significant attention is given to exploring various sustainable conservation strategies in response to environmental perturbation in these estuarine-mangrove ecosystems, including the development of community infrastructure based on surveys and extensive planning of resource management, especially on of freshwater and food availability, management of strategies for natural hazards and disasters, and necessity of using eco-monitoring tools such as remote sensing and GIS to facilitate community engagement and informed management. The book is meant for academics, researchers, and students interested in natural sciences, environmental planning and management, as well as environmental policy makers.

Dr. Susanta Kumar Chakraborty, Professor of Zoology, Vidyasagar University, born on 31st,July, 1960, has been in active research since 1982 on Ecology-Coastal, Mangrove, Fresh Water Wetlands Rivers and Estuaries, with an emphasis on Biodiversity, rural biotechnology, ecosystem dynamics and environmental management. So far, he has successfully supervised the Ph.D. thesis of 44 researchers, published around 250 research papers in different reputed International and National Journals, written a number of books including the text book, Riverine Ecology (Volume I and II) and Wetlands Ecology published by Springer Nature, U.S.A., Edited book on Wetlands and Urban Resilience  in the Boook Series of Sustainable Development Goals , Springer , completed fifteen (15) research projects, delivered more than hundred invited talks across the world, achieved  two ( 2) International Patents , shouldered a number of administrative responsibilities as Vice Chancellor, Dean, Faculty of Sciences, Head of the Department, Member of the Executive Council, Member of the Finance Committee, Chairman of Governing bodies etc. in  Vidyasagar University and also in other Universities and several Government Departments like U.G.C.,I.C.A.R. etc. He has received a number of awards in recognition of his research commitments.   Prof. (Dr.) Sankar Kr Acharya, presently, Dean, Post Graduate Studies, former Head Dept. of Agril Extension and Director, Extension Education, Bidhan Chandra KrishiViswavidyalaya, Mohanpur, WB, born on 6th October, 1960, has been in teaching, research , academic administration and extension over 36 years. An erudite teacher as well as an elegant speaker, he is internationally acclaimed for his unique research domain of Social Entropy and Energy Metabolism, Social Ecology and Environmental Sociology, Enterprise Ecology Framework, Conservation Stewardships.  He has published 253 research papers in National and International Journals, supervised 26 Ph.D. thesis, achieved several prestigious awards and authored 125 books. He served as an Expert Member for Agriculture Commission; Marketing and Extension Sub Committee, Government  of West Bengal and World Wild Life Fund (WWF )project  in Buxa Tiger Reserve ( BTR) , in the University of Manchester, UK on the hunger, poverty and silence. He visited several countries like Italy, France, Germany, China, Sri Lanka and Bangladesh in connection with his academic commitments. He is the Fellow, West Bengal Academy of Science and Technology(WAST) , Kolkata and Indian Society of Extension Education (ISEE), New Delhi. He has a rich profile of editorial and reviewers’ contributions in several  national and international journals.
