Autorenporträt
Sándor Márai nació en 1900 en Kassa, una pequeña ciudad húngara que hoy pertenece a Eslovaquia. Pasó un período de exilio voluntario en Europa durante el régimen de Horthy en los años veinte, hasta que abandonó definitivamente su país en 1948, con la llegada del régimen comunista, y emigró a Estados Unidos. La subsiguiente prohibición de su obra en Hungría hizo caer en el olvido a quien en ese momento estaba considerado uno de los escritores más importantes de la literatura centroeuropea. Así, habría que esperar varios decenios, hasta el ocaso del comunismo, para que este extraordinario escritor fuese redescubierto en su país y en el mundo entero. Sándor Márai se quitó la vida en 1989 en San Diego, California, pocos meses antes de la caída del Muro de Berlín.
