Emerging contaminants, or contaminants of concern, which range from microplastics, industrial chemicals, cosmetics, and pesticides, to pharmaceuticals and pathogens, present unique issues and challenges to communities across the globe. The risk assessment and management of these potential hazards require an integrated, multi-disciplinary approach in connection with the holistic framework of One Health. This book explains the need for collaboration between researchers, policymakers, public health professionals, and other stakeholders to address the serious gaps between emerging contaminants and One Health. It offers practical strategies and solutions for managing emerging contaminants effectively. Features * Discusses an important and timely concept of contaminants of concern with the perspective of One Health * Focuses on the existing research gaps in managing emerging contaminants * Emphasizes the urgent need for collaboration between field experts in biotechnology, bioresources, bioeconomics, environmental engineering, and environmental sciences * Provides state-of-the-art technological developments, their advantages, and challenges associated with emerging contaminants Professionals and researchers in Environmental Engineering and Sciences, Biosciences, and Public Health will benefit from the practical approach, strategies, and solutions featured in this book. It is also great supplementary reading for students taking courses in areas such as Environmental Health, Pollution and Environmental Assessment, and Environmental Policy and Regulation.
Autorenporträt
Ramsha Khan is currently working as a Postdoctoral Researcher at the University of Catania, Italy. A key focus of her research work involves promoting sustainability in agricultural systems through integration of circular economy approaches, precision farming through remote sensing, water quality monitoring, detection and analysis of heavy metals, microplastics, and waste valorization. Saurabh Shukla is currently working as a Postdoctoral Researcher at University of Catania, Italy. His research interests include monitoring surface and ground water resources, monitoring agricultural systems through precision farming and waste valorization, and carbon-based materials for wastewater remediation. His research interests align with the Sustainable Development Goal (SDG 6). Preeti Chaturvedi Bhargava is Principal Scientist at CSIR-Indian Institute of Toxicology Research (CSIR-IITR), Lucknow. Currently, her work involves biochar synthesis using different catalysts for enhancing adsorption capacity for remediation and adsorption of pollutants from wastewater. She is also involved in the development of green technologies for effluent treatment for a sustainable environment and health. She has worked as a visiting scientist at EPFL, Lausanne, Switzerland, North A & F University, Yangling, China and Bioprocess Engineering Department, UFPR, Curitiba, Brazil. She has published over 90 research/review papers in peer reviewed journals and has edited three books. Paolo Roccaro is full Professor of Sanitary and Environmental Engineering at the Department of Civil Engineering and Architecture, University of Catania, Italy. He has been a Fulbright Scholar at the University of Arizona in Tucson and Visiting Scientist at the University of Washington, Seattle, WA. He has coordinated many grant-funded projects and has also worked on projects funded by the European Commission, and the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (USEPA). His research focus includes water quality, removal of micropollutants from water, formation and control of disinfection by-products (DBP) in water, removal and control of contaminants of emerging concern (CEC) in water and wastewaters systems, wastewater treatment and reuse, etc.
