This study was carried out as part of the Production Engineering project of the COPPE/UFRJ postgraduate program, under the Environmental Management research line. As a case study, we looked at a small imperial topaz mine located in Ouro Preto, Minas Gerais, which was being inspected by the State Environmental Agency, with the risk of its possible closure. José Fernando es licenciado en Ingeniería de Minas por la Universidad Federal de Ouro Preto (1991) y Máster en Ingeniería de Producción por la Universidad Federal de Río de Janeiro (1996). Actualmente es profesor adjunto N4 - 40hDE en el Departamento de Ingeniería de Minas de la Escuela de Minas de la Universidad Federal de Ouro Preto.
