Essays in Socialism: New and Old is a collection of essays written by Ernest Belfort Bax, a prominent British socialist and feminist of the late 19th and early 20th centuries. The book was first published in 1906 and contains a series of essays that explore various aspects of socialism, including its history, philosophy, and political implications. The essays in this book cover a wide range of topics, including the origins of socialism, the relationship between socialism and democracy, the role of the state in a socialist society, and the challenges facing the socialist movement in the early 20th century. Bax also examines the works of prominent socialist thinkers such as Karl Marx, Friedrich Engels, and William Morris, and offers his own critiques and interpretations of their ideas. One of the key themes of the book is the tension between the traditional Marxist vision of socialism as a revolutionary movement aimed at overthrowing capitalism and the more gradualist approach advocated by some socialists in the early 20th century. Bax argues that while socialism must ultimately aim at the abolition of capitalism, it is also important to work within existing political structures to achieve incremental reforms that improve the lives of working people.Overall, Essays in Socialism: New and Old provides a comprehensive overview of the socialist movement in the early 20th century, as well as a thoughtful analysis of the key issues and debates within the movement. It remains an important work for anyone interested in the history and philosophy of socialism. This scarce antiquarian book is a facsimile reprint of the old original and may contain some imperfections such as library marks and notations. Ernest Belfort Bax was an English barrister, journalist, philosopher, men's rights activist, socialist, and historian. Ernest Belfort Bax was born on July 23, 1854, in Leamington Spa, the son of Daniel Bax, a wealthy Mackintosh raincoat manufacturer and traditionalist nonconformist. Bax's elder brother, barrister Alfred Ridley Bax, was the father of composer and writer Arnold Bax, as well as playwright and essayist Clifford Bax. In his Reminiscences and Reflexions of a Mid and Late Victorian (1918), he laments the restricted Evangelicanism and Sabbatarianism in which he was raised as having left "an enduringly unpleasant reminiscence behind it". Between the years 1864 and 1875, he was privately taught by tutors and influenced by George Lewes, William Lecky, Alexander Bain, Herbert Spencer, and John Stuart Mill, all of whom contributed to his commitment to rationality. The Franco-German War and its aftermath, the Commune, sparked his interest in public affairs when he was sixteen years old. During this time, his political ideals were a mix of common radicalism and dreams for economic equality.
