The Pine Needleminer (Exoteleia pinifoliella) is a moth of the Gelechiidae family. It is found in eastern North America. There is one generation per year. The larvae feed on various hard pines, including Jack pine and Pitch pine. They mine needles and spend the winter in a mined needle. It bores into additional needles and changes into a pupa within its last mine. A moth is an insect closely related to the butterfly, both being of the order Lepidoptera. Moths form the majority of this order; there are thought to be 150,000 to 250,000 different species of moth (about ten times the number of species of butterfly), with thousands of species yet to be described.
