Early experiences with theatre inspired his passion for storytelling and dedication to amplifying diverse voices in various theatrical communities, where he saw the power of the arts to unite people. As executive director of the Frank Silvera Writers' Workshop Foundation, which was founded in 1973 by his late father, Garland Sr., along with Morgan Freeman, Billie Allen Henderson, and Clayton Riley, he continues to support Afro-American and many other playwrights through live new play readings on Zoom and online education programs as they develop new narratives reflecting their rich experiences. His acting experience includes many Shakespearean roles (Count Orsino, Ned Poins, Sir Andrew Aguecheek), in addition to plays by Moliere, George Bernard Shaw, Dario Fo, and Bertolt Brecht's THE THREEPENNY OPERA as the London crime kingpin MacHeath aka Mack the Knife--one of his favorite roles. His contemporary credits include THE ODD COUPLE, THE EXONERATED, and a stage adaptation of the 1941 Gary Cooper/Barbara Stanwyck film MEET JOHN DOE at the San Jose Stage Company. Garland began his poetry career in 1990 in Los Angeles, making significant contributions as a poet, spoken-word performer, and producer. Notably, he ranked 18th out of 200 at the 1998 National Poetry Slam, showcasing his skills on the national stage. He also toured the U.S., the UK, and Scotland with Miguel Algarin and Piri Thomas on the Latino Poets Tour, elevating the international profile of spoken word poetry. Besides performing nationwide, he co-founded Monterey's Rubber Chicken Poetry Slam and Open Mic in 2002 with Kathryn Pettrucelli, a platform that lasted 18 years. He also founded and produced the annual West Coast Championship Poetry Slam from 1998 to 2007, hosting it at the Henry Miller Library in Big Sur, California, demonstrating his commitment to nurturing poetic talent. He served as Poet Laureate of Pacific Grove, California, from 2007 to 2008. In June 2025, he was a featured poet and teacher at the 14th annual Jimmy Santiago Baca Writers Retreat in Albuquerque, NM. He's been featured at major events, including the Austin International Poetry Festival. His poetry appears in journals and anthologies, such as Revival: Spoken Word from Lollapalooza '94 and From the Inside: NYC through the Eyes of the Poets Who Live Here (2022). Garland advanced arts education as a teaching artist with the Arts Council for Monterey County, engaging youth in creative expression. With the Arts Council, he started and led the Monterey County chapter of Poetry Out Loud, a highly respected annual national recitation contest. In 2012, at the Salinas Public Library, where he worked as a filmmaker, event producer, and manager of the library's Digital Arts Lab, he launched the Salinas Youth Poet Laureate Program to empower young writers. The program continues to this day.
