Biometrics (from the Greek Bios = Life and Metron = measure), which means measurement of life, is the name given to the branch of science that studies measurements of living beings. Biometric systems are systems that allow individuals to be identified through their physical and/or behavioral characteristics. Examples of physical characteristics include fingerprints, hand geometry, retinal veins, iris texture, and facial appearance. Examples of behavioral characteristics include typing dynamics, voice, and signature. Among the methods based on biometric characteristics, there is great interest in those based on facial characteristics for the identification of individuals. Due to its practical importance and the interests of cognitive scientists, research in face recognition is as old as computer vision itself. Research in face recognition has developed in the direction of creating systems capable of identifying people even when they are unaware that they are being observed.
