Demographic growth and galloping urbanization encourage the production and multiplication of waste. The city of Cotonou, Benin's economic capital, is confronted with the problem of household sanitation and waste management. Institutional management of household waste has been marked by two eras: that of COGEDA in public-private partnership with the city's Technical Services Department (DST), whose activities lasted from the era of democratic renewal in 1991 to June 2020, and that of Société de Gestion des Déchets et de la Salubrité (SGDS SA) since July 2020. Despite the modernization announced for the new era of household waste management in Cotonou, households are adopting a number of management practices that compromise the cleanliness of their living environment. This paper reviews the management system of SGDS SA and makes proposals for improving household waste management in the city of Cotonou. The SEPO analysis method was used to identify measures for improving waste management in the research environment.
