Carl Maria von Weber's Der Freischütz is a well-known opera in Europe, and Paul Taffanel, inspired by it, composed his Fantasia for Flute and Piano sur le Freischütz. This thesis compares the two different works, Carl Maria von Weber's Der Freischütz and Paul Taffanel's sur le Freischütz. The themes presented and varied in the fantasy are described in terms of their characteristics and textual significance in the opera. Paul Taffanel's variation work 'sur le Freischütz' is a highly virtuosic piece for flute and piano. This thesis analyses both versions of Der Freischütz in terms of their historical background, content and musical differences. In summary, it concludes that there are differences from a flute-playing perspective.
