Michael Grant hatte eine bewegte Kindheit. Die Familie zog aufgrund der Arbeit des Vaters beim US-Militär oft um - Grant besuchte zehn Schulen in fünf amerikanischen Staaten und verbrachte auch einige Zeit in Frankreich. Derzeit lebt er mit seiner Frau, der Autorin Katherine Applegate, und seinen zwei Kindern in North Carolina.
