Clarence Hawkes was an American author and lecturer, recognized for his nature stories and poetry. Born on December 16, 1869, in Goshen, Massachusetts, he developed a deep connection to the natural world, which became a central focus of his writing. Hawkes faced a significant challenge in life when he became blind, an experience he explored in his autobiography, The Darkened Path: A Story of Blindness and Its Triumphs, published in 1918. This work detailed his personal journey of overcoming the limitations imposed by blindness and finding new ways to engage with the world. Throughout his career, Hawkes wrote numerous books that celebrated the beauty of nature and the resilience of the human spirit. His works often illustrated the transformative power of nature, as well as the perseverance required to overcome adversity. Hawkes passed away on January 19, 1954, at the age of 84. He was the son of John and Sarah Hawkes, who played an important role in nurturing his love for writing and the outdoors.
