Folklore / local customs and interculturality / inculturation are concerned with the study of the nativity scene, which takes on significance at Christmas time. In addition, the study of nativity scenes is of interest in the preservation and appreciation of cultural and religious competence as an element in the representation of biblical events at Christmas time. The author presents this connection from this dual perspective resulting from his educational biography. This context is seen as an enrichment of the views of nativity scene studies. In the following, the history of the nativity scene, nativity scene concepts and customs in Tyrol are discussed first. The cultural-religious dimension/competence and (ethnological) museum studies conclude the study, which sets personal priorities and analyses the specialist literature.Image source from the private archive of Herbert Jenewein, photo of an oriental house cot from Amras (district of Innsbruck), 2023.
