This book is the first volume of a five-part monograph on the art of Canada's Pacific Northwest coast and is part of my dissertation: "Formline Design and the Transformation of the Trickster Image in Theory and Art History: With Special Reference to the Ethnic Groups of Canada's Pacific Northwest Coast." The book is an excerpt and deals with the first chapter of the doctoral thesis, with Formline Design on the southern coast, and with the question of how Native American artists of the Coast Salish depict the image of the raven trickster in different ways through Formline Design.
