A parent's worst nightmare...and a police chief's as well! As dusk settles on Chief of Police Judith Anderson's first Founders Day celebration in her adopted city, she's breathing out a sigh and itching to get out of her dress uniform. Her relief is short-lived, though, when a mother's scream cuts the air. Her toddler is missing. Judith's department springs into action, but there's no sign of the child-just a blood-chilling discovery. A stuffed bear, found near where she disappeared and wearing the little girl's pink sunglasses, suggests a sinister motive rather than an accident. Judith oversees a team of law enforcement officers from all over northern Florida who comb the city, but she's struggling with multiple distractions, including flashbacks to her own cousin's abduction decades ago. Suspects for the toddler's kidnapping are plentiful, yet their leads aren't panning out. And with every passing hour, the odds of finding the little girl unharmed diminish. Can Judith and her team find the child in time, or will she have to face the heart-wrenching reality that this little one, like her cousin, may never be found...or at least not alive?
In her youth, Kassandra Lamb had two great passions-psychology and writing. Advised that writers need day jobs—and being partial to eating—she studied psychology. Her career as a psychotherapist and college professor taught her much about the dark side of human nature, but also much about resilience, perseverance, and the healing power of laughter. Now retired, she spends most of her time in an alternate universe populated by her fictional characters. The portal to this universe (aka her computer) is located in northern Florida where her husband and dog catch occasional glimpses of her. She has written three series: The Kate Huntington Mysteries, The Kate on Vacation Mysteries, and the Marcia Banks and Buddy Cozy Mysteries. And she's now started a fourth series of police procedurals, The C.o.P. on the Scene Mysteries.
