This research paper will be looking at the French involvement in the Jacobite rising of 1745-6 with the main aim of ascertaining why the French supported the rising and ultimately why the support was so limited? The paper is broken up into three chapters; the first will be looking at the likelihood of a French invasion of Britain in support of the Jacobites from 1744-46; the second chapter will discuss the nature of French support for the rebellion in Scotland and the third chapter will look at what influence the possibility of French support had on the campaign and outcome of the 45 rebellion.
