In today's boardrooms, technology is no longer just a support function - it is a driver of growth, differentiation, and long-term resilience. Yet many Chief Technology Officers remain trapped in the role of executor, speaking only in technical terms while the business demands strategic guidance. From CTO to Trusted Advisor is a practical playbook for technology leaders who want to elevate their influence and translate complex systems into clear business outcomes. Drawing on decades of real-world experience, the book reveals how to transition from managing servers, codebases, and infrastructure to shaping corporate strategy, driving revenue growth, and becoming a trusted advisor to the CEO. Across twenty detailed chapters, readers will discover how to build trust with executive peers, use storytelling with data to make the investment case, bridge the gap between engineering teams and finance, and navigate the politics of large organizations. Along the way, practical examples drawn from enterprise transformation projects, ranging from financial services to telecommunications and digital media, bring to life the skills required to become indispensable in the C-suite. Whether leading a Fortune 500 technology organization, scaling a fast-growth company, or stepping into a first CTO role, this book equips leaders with the language, mindset, and tools to evolve into true trusted advisors. It is as much about influence and vision as it is about systems and platforms, showing how a CTO can create impact far beyond the technology stack.
Autorenporträt
Alex Barenboim has spent more than three decades shaping enterprise software for some of the world's largest companies, including IBM, ADT/Tyco, Verizon, and Bankrate, where he directed engineering organizations numbering in the hundreds and delivered platforms with billions of dollars at stake. With a Bachelor's in Computer Science from Boston University, a Master's in Computer Science and an MBA from the University of Oxford, his career bridges deep technical expertise with executive leadership. Over the past decade, Mr. Barenboim has applied those same lessons to startups and mid-sized ventures, guiding them through the practical realities of scaling mobile apps, cloud platforms, AI solutions, and managed services. As a CTO for many years, he has lived the successes and setbacks of nearshore, offshore, and multishore models firsthand. This blend of enterprise rigor and startup agility makes his perspective uniquely valuable, and it is why this book equips technology and software development executives with the tools to thrive in the complex world of global software engineering.
