Forty pupils studying Ordinary Level English Language and six teachers from three Secondary Schools in Tafara-Mabvuku District of Harare Region were involved in this study. The researcher used the simple random sampling method. The questionnaire return rate for the pupils was 87.5% (i.e 35 pupils) and the teachers return rate was 100%. The instruments used to collect data were questionnaire interviews and documentary review. Data was analysed and interpreted using descriptive statistics. The study reviewed that girls performed better than boys . Also revealed was that both boys and girls are highly motivated to study the subject and that English Language is the most preferred for the female respondents.The researcher recommended that the English teacher should be made aware of the gender differences in performance so that he/she be sensitive to it.

Studied for a M.Ed in Educational Psychology with Great Zimbabwe University and B.Ed with Zimbabwe Open University. He trained as a teacher at Hillside Teacher's College. He taught English language and Literature in Zimbabwe for a number of years. He is currently involved in Special Needs Education at Hope School for Special Needs in Kuwait.
