Produktbeschreibung
Two mitochondrial DNA genes were used to study genetic variation within and among population of L. rohita from thirteen riverine populations. Both the mitochondrial genes proved to be highly useful markers in resolving population structure and determining recent population expansion. The study suggests that The genetic bottlenecks and founders effect take time before negative impacts are visible. In the light of the observed population expansion and concerns raised, it is essential that adequate measures for conservation be undertaken for propagation assisted stock specific rehabilitation of riverine population of L. rohita. It is also important that the artificial gene flow between distinct stocks/non-native stocks through means of haphazard stocking and rehabilitation programmes should be strictly avoided. Such stock mixing poses a significant genetic risk to native populations; when transplanted individuals survive and interbreed with the resident stock, the resulting offspring may be poorly adapted. The information obtained from the stock structure in L. rohita wild population will help in planning and execution of fisheries management.
