This paper presents some discussions on assessment procedures applied in the Brazilian educational system at the federal, state, and municipal levels. The main focus is on the public policy that implemented the National Secondary Education Examination (ENEM), analysing its methodological and structural characteristics, as well as its objectives and government programmes linked to the examination.
