Wars of solitude surveys the strategies adopted by Spanish literature in the description of characters situated beyond traditional patriotism and other figments of warlike rhetoric. Guerrillas, mercenaries, partisans, spies, fifth columnists, outlaws, renegades, traitors and conspirers swarm through these pages, loaded with their small wars, their secret, lost, private or fictive wars. The exploration is conceived as a coherent and suggestive trip with twelve stations, in the company of such heterogeneous authors as Cervantes, Comella, Galdós or Isaac Montero, ordered in terms of increased irregularity. Their profiles are written straight with crooked lines, and, regardless of their historic setting, they share a common feature: the action takes place behind the scenes, and its heroes are soldiers resigned to solitude and disgrace.
