Produktbeschreibung
This reference work presents a comprehensive and authoritative overview of the rapidly evolving field of synthetic biology. It brings together the foundational concepts, technological innovations, and wide-ranging applications that define this discipline. By applying engineering principles to biological systems, synthetic biology enables the design of novel biological parts, systems, and functions. The handbook explores recent breakthroughs ranging from synthetic circuits for diagnostics and therapeutics to engineered biomaterials and biomolecules, positioning itself as a valuable, one-stop reference for this interdisciplinary science.

Synthetic biology is an exponentially growing field that employs the application of engineering principles to biology. It is transformative field at the intersection of biology, engineering, and computation. It allows precise control and design of biological systems through synthetic promoters, ribosome binding sites, genetic circuits, and other engineered components. These capabilities are driving innovations in health, environment, and energy.

The handbook is organized into five sections. Section I: highlights the fundamentals of synthetic biology, section II: Advances in synthetic biology, section III: Applications of synthetic biology, section IV: synthetic biology for human disease and section V: synthetic biology ethics and regulations. Each section is consistently organized, so that the handbook introduces synthetic biology - from historical backgrounds and the fundamentals, over the description of the methods and technology, to their applications. Each chapter provides accessible, well-structured insights for readers across disciplines.

This handbook is designed for a diverse audience including researchers, students, clinicians, industry experts, and policymakers. It serves as both an introductory guide and a detailed reference, offering rich, easy-to-understand content enhanced by clarity, depth, and broad coverage. This is a foundational resource for anyone looking to engage with the future of synthetic biology.

Dr. Vijai Singh is a Professor and Head of the Department of Biosciences, School of Science, and Dean (Research & Innovation) at Indrashil University, Rajpur, Mehsana, India. He served as an Associate Professor in the Department of Biosciences at the same university. Earlier, he worked as an Assistant Professor in the Department of Biological Sciences and Biotechnology at the Institute of Advanced Research, Gandhinagar, and in the Department of Biotechnology at Invertis University, Bareilly, India. Prior to that, he was a Postdoctoral Fellow in the Synthetic Biology Group at the Institute of Systems and Synthetic Biology, Paris, France and the School of Energy & Chemical Engineering at the Ulsan National Institute of Science and Technology, Ulsan, South Korea. Prof. Singh earned his Ph.D. in Biotechnology (2009) from the ICAR–National Bureau of Fish Genetic Resources and Uttar Pradesh Technical University, Lucknow, India, where his research focused on developing molecular and immunoassays for the diagnosis of Aeromonas hydrophila. His research interests are focused on the design of a novel biosynthetic pathway for production of medically and industrially important biomolecules. His laboratory is actively working on CRISPR-Cas9-based genome editing tools and has developed CRISPR-based diagnostics for Klebsiella pneumoniae. Prof. Singh’s laboratory is strongly supported by national and state government funding agencies to drive research and innovations. With over 15 years of experience in research and teaching, his areas of specialization include synthetic biology, genome editing, metabolic engineering, and industrial microbiology. He has authored 232 Scopus-indexed publications, including 111 research articles, 27 books, 91 book chapters, and holds 3 patents. Prof. Singh has received several prestigious awards, including the Bioclues Innovation, Research and Development Award (2023) by the BIOCLUES Society, the Vice Chancellor’s Best Research Award (2023) by Indrashil University, and the Agathiyar Chemical Biology Award (2023) by the Society of Chemical and Synthetic Biology. Prof. Singh serves associate Editor, editorial board members and reviewers for peer reviewed international journals.
