Zona Gale (1874-1938) was an American novelist, playwright, and short story writer known for her realistic portrayals of small town life. Born in Portage, Wisconsin, she based much of her work on her hometown experiences, capturing the nuances of Midwestern life with warmth and insight. She gained national recognition with her novel Miss Lulu Bett, which she later adapted into a play becoming the first woman to win the Pulitzer Prize for Drama in 1921. A strong advocate for women's rights and social reform, Gale combined literary talent with a deep commitment to progressive causes, leaving a lasting impact on American literature and culture.
