In light of the claim by many Jews and Christians that God promised the land of Israel in perpetuity to the natural offspring of Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob, it seemed fitting to examine the Scriptures in the Old and New Testaments that cover the topic of the Promised Land to determine if that claim is correct. A thorough examination of the Scriptures leads one to understand that the earth is the Lord's and that God promised a small portion, the land of Israel, to Abraham's natural descendants, but merely as tenants. Their stay in the land depended on their behavior, which was supposed to correspond with their faith. The failure of the ancient and New Testament Israelites to keep their land as a possession reflects the inability of humankind to live morally responsibly on earth and to rule and keep it as God had intended at creation. However, those Christ has redeemed through God's mercy and grace enter the kingdom of God and will one day inherit the promised new earth, which is what the patriarchs, prophets, and New Testament authors understood the old land promises pointed to. Ultimately, the stay in the land by the natural descendants of Abraham was only a shadow and type of what was to come, when Abraham's Descendant, Jesus, and eventually all who are in Him, would receive the whole world as an inheritance.
