Napoléon Peyrat - 20 janvier 1809, Les Bordes-sur-Arize ; 4 avril 1881, Saint-Germain-en-Laye Originaire d'une vieille famille protestante de l'Ariège, il fait ses études à la faculté de théologie protestante de Montauban. Après avoir envisagé des études de médecine, il s'accorde quelques années de bohème, qui verront la naissance de ses premières oeuvres de poète et d'historien. Nommé pasteur auxiliaire à Saint-Germain-en-Laye en 1844, il y sera titularisé en 1854 et y exercera son ministère jusqu'à la fin de sa vie. Pionnier et spécialiste de l'histoire du protestantisme, il dépasse pourtant son sujet par la dimension profondément humaine de ses écrits.
