After a victorious return from war to the refined courts, a dashing Marquis embarks on a compelling journey through society marked by dual romancesâ a naive young woman and a dignified widow. His entangled liaisons spark heartbreaking betrayals and offer a keen critique of a rigid, unequal order with early feminist echoes.

Autorenporträt
Marie-Jeanne Riccoboni ( 7 3–92) was one of the best-selling novelists of eighteenth-century France and was known as a consummate stylist. In her work, she explored issues of marriage and romantic relationships while tackling the difficult question of women's independence in a society dominated by men. Unusually for a woman author during this era, she supported herself through her writing.
