"A family history from the 1890s to the 21st century embedded in research on German history that provides context for our family's life. Paul Bernstein, my father, was Jewish; his wife, Johanna Moosdorf, was not. A decorated and wounded WWI veteran, he was murdered in Auschwitz in 1944.Their two half-Jewish children, Barbara and Thomas, born in 1935 and 1937, were in some danger during WWII, but survived because Nazi policy distinguished between full and half-Jews and because of our mother's heroic efforts to keep us safe.
