Hot and Moody portrays the perspective of a young girl dealing with mental illness, writing down her experiences through poetry ever since she was 14 years old. The author of this book, Bevin Mirielle Macutay, is a Filipina-American mixed media artist who suffers from Bipolar II and Anxiety disorder. To make light of her situation, she creates artwork to express her unfortunately ongoing pain and frustration. This book is, essentially, an exposure of herself to the world. It contains a series of poems, written from when she started high school up until she started dating her current partner. With an archive filled with an abundance of taken photographs, sketches, and colored surfaces, the spreads of the book outline, in the artist's own beautiful and chaotic way, the turmoil she faced during the writing of each poem. She hopes that sharing this book will bring awareness to those with mental illness, connect with those who can relate, and encourage an outlet for others to express themselves.
Bevin Mirielle Macutay is a Filipina mixed media artist based in New York. She was awarded Cum Laude at SUNY Purchase and earned her Bachelor of Science degree in Visual Arts in May of 2020. She considers herself non-binary and pansexual and only uses she/her pronouns because it's easier for other people, but in reality, she doesn't mind either way. She loves creating, no matter in which medium, and enjoys being a part of new experiences. Despite going through a lot in her life, she has never given up and has always found solace through her art practice. She hopes that, through her growth, her outlet for expression, openness, and unwilling vulnerability will continue to inspire others to do the same.
