During the era of democratic renewal in Benin, the period from 1990 to 2020 was deeply marked by the determination of the institutions in charge of household waste management to clean up the environment and offer people a more or less healthy living environment. In Cotonou, the country's economic capital, this commitment has resulted in a management system steered by the Town Hall via its Technical Services Department (DST), in public-private partnership with the Coordination des ONG de Gestion des Déchets solides ménagers (COGEDA). This book is the result of scientific research in the sector. It aims to analyze the institutional system of household waste management in Cotonou before the advent of Société de Gestion des Déchets et de la Salubrité (SGDS SA). A SWOT analysis of the local household waste management system revealed a number of management shortcomings. With a view to better organizing the sector through modernization, the country's government entrusted SGDS.SA with waste management in several of Cotonou's neighboring towns, such as Porto-Novo, Sèmè, Abomey-Calavi, and Ouidah under the name of Grand-Nokoué.
