"You can't drive at highway speed in first gear, and you can't live at the speed of destiny in the first gear of grace." When you shift through the gears of a vehicle there is tension felt when you reach each gear's speed limit. Using that as a metaphor, Landen identifies six 'gears of grace' or revelations of the nature of God's grace, along with the tension that one feels when one reaches the speed limit of that revelation. He then identifies the 'clutch' or discipline of a disciple necessary to relieve that tension, allowing for the 'shift into a new gear' to grow as a disciple.
