Rapid global economic and industrial development has resulted in an increasing number of vehicles on roads worldwide. More than 400 million scrap tires are generated each year in the world, mainly in North America, Europe and Asia. Many reasons make the disposal of scrap tires a serious environmental concern, such as requiring landfill area and causing direct pollution. In order to minimize the negative impact of the waste of tires, many countries seek ways to dispose of tyres responsibly. Many civil engineering approaches have been considered to utilize scrap tires for the enhancement of the mechanical properties of construction materials. Such an improvement has been undertaken in asphalt pavement mixture, using scrap tires as crumb rubber modifier (CRM) to increase the elasticity response of binder, increasing asphalt pavement life, increasing resistance to thermal cracking, reducing traffic noise, minimizing maintenance cost and increasing resistance to permanent deformation.
