With her children flying the nest and retirement age approaching, Megan Knoyle Lewis, one of the UK's leading pony breeders, determines to fulfil her lifelong dream of completing a long ride. Inspired by the handover of the Olympic Games, she sets out to travel from Beijing to London - the first leg of a journey which will lead to her becoming the first person to travel around the world on horseback! In 2008, armed with months of research and her unbreakable spirit, she flies to China to begin the first phase of this epicundertaking. In the Shadow of the Great Wall follows Megan and her various companions, both two and four-legged, as they walk, lope, and trot in history's footsteps from one end of the Ming Great Wall to the other. Filled with entertaining anecdotes, charming observations, and intriguing historical tales, Megan's story is tough, honest, and sure to leave readers feeling awed and inspired.
Megan Knoyle Lewis has never led a conventional life. During her childhood living in Malaya (now Malaysia) she travelled in South-East Asia and Australia. She attended school in both Kuala Lumpur and London, and holds an MA in South-East Asian Studies from the School of Oriental and African Studies. Megan is the first and only person to have ridden round the world on horseback, covering such iconic routes as the Pony Express Trail in the United States of America and, during her epic trek from Beijing to London, parts of the Silk Road. When not travelling the world, Megan can be found at home on her Cwrtycadno stud in Pumpsaint, Carmarthenshire, where she breeds award-winning Welsh Section B ponies.
