The management of the technological innovation process is an important factor in differentiating the competitiveness of companies. Here, a proposal for a reference model to support innovation was developed, through the creation of a conceptual roadmap of the journey that takes an invention to market. In its preparation, the main elements were identified, referred to here as the Innovation Support Process (PSI): conception, research, development, and future projection, as well as the interactions existing in this network of concepts, activities, and information flows that determine the innovation process. The study includes (as a basis for analyzing the situation) an examination of the behavior of the trade balance by technological intensity, the results of technological innovation research, as well as the main government mechanisms for supporting innovation. The main results show that Brazil has a low capacity for innovation and a significant need to promote improvements in the production process. In this sense, it is concluded that the management of this model can be oriented to facilitate understanding of the network of interactions that exist in the process from invention to market.
