The field of endocrinology is concerned with the hormonal mechanisms that regulate many bodily functions, including metabolism, growth, reproduction, electrolytes and water balance. In recent years, endocrinology has expanded to include a broader range of human experiences, such as aging and longevity, gender identity, and transplantation. These developments have been made possible by interdisciplinary research in endocrinology. Molecular modeling has led to the development of novel medications, and stem cell research has opened new avenues for treating previously incurable endocrine diseases, such as diabetes. However, these advances have also given rise to new ethical dilemmas that require interdisciplinary research to resolve. For example, medical ethicists, philosophers, and religious authorities are engaged in heated debates regarding the use of stem cells and the potential risks associated with dismantling the human embryo, which many consider to be the alteration of human life. This book addresses some of these challenges, caused by recent advances in the biology and medicine, and hopes to shed light on their impact in the field of endocrinology.
This book is primarily intended for endocrinologists, but we hope it will also be useful to scientists and practitioners in other medical fields, and a guide for future medical practice and research.

Autorenporträt
Dr. Hossein Gharib, a graduate of University of Michigan Medical School, has been a professor of medicine at the Mayo Clinic College of Medicine, in Rochester, Minnesota, for the last four decades. He is widely recognized as an international authority on thyroid disorders and has published more than 200 peer-reviewed papers, lectured at more than 350 national and international endocrine events, served on the editorial boards of major endocrine journals, and has published four endocrine textbooks, including “The Thyroid Nodule,” in 2017. He has received numerous awards and honors, including the Master of the American College of Physicians (MACP) and the Master of the American College of Endocrinology (MACE). He is a past president of the American Association of Clinical Endocrinology, the American College of Endocrinology and the American Thyroid Association. Dr. Bagher Larijani, MD, FACE, has authored numerous textbooks and journal articles and, with h-index of 91, is considered one of the most renowned Iranian academics in the field of endocrinology and related clinical and basic sciences. Through the foundation of Endocrinology and Metabolism Research Institute of the Tehran University of Medical Sciences, the highest-ranking medical research center in Iran, he laid the foundation of the interdisciplinary approach to clinical medicine for the first time in the country. His main field of interest has always been developing a comprehensive and holistic approach to medicine through forging collaboration amongst scientists and scholars from different fields whose achievements may promote the prevention, diagnosis, and treatment of endocrine diseases. He has also contributed to many global-scale scientific projects, such as the Lancet Commission on Obesity and Climate Change. Dr. Mandana Hasanzad is a Professor of Genetics at the Personalized Medicine Research Center of Endocrinology and Metabolism Clinical Sciences Institute at Tehran University of Medical Sciences whose research focuses on precision medicine, pharmacogenomics, and the integration of big data and artificial intelligence in human genomics. Her scientific work is particularly centered on non-communicable diseases, with an emphasis on internal medicine and cardiometabolic disorders. Dr. Hasanzad is the author of several peer-reviewed scientific articles and multiple academic books that contribute to the cutting edge of knowledge in genetics and personalized medicine. She leads two major research initiatives in the field of precision medicine and pharmacogenomics approach. She is a member of the International Consortium for Personalised Medicine (ICPerMed) and an active member of the Clinical Pharmacogenetics Implementation Consortium (CPIC).
