The retention of talented teachers continues to be a problem for many urban schools. Through a series of interviews, the life histories of four veteran urban elementary teachers are recorded. Joanna Durham-Barnes, Ph.D., is an Assistant Professor of Elementary Education at Indiana University Southeast. She spent several years as an elementary school teacher in Louisville, Kentucky before pursuing her doctorate in Curriculum & Instruction focusing on diversity and international education with an emphasis on urban teacher education.
