Kaleidoscope, compiled by one of the most experienced textbook teams in the country, is an innovative collection of American stories, intended for two primary applications in college and university classes: firstly, as a reader for courses in composition and, secondly, as a fiction anthology for use in "Introduction to Literature" courses, the dimensions of which have recently been changing in new and exciting ways. Using as their thematic focus the question "What do stories tell us about the diversity of Americans?", Barbara and George Perkins balance stories by writers long excluded from the canon with those considered to belong to the mainsteam. The expansion of the American literary canon has become commonplace in any discussion of literary studies; the present collection reflects this expansion by including not only stories that have heretofore been considered outside the fiction genre, but also cultural documents that provide insight into our country's multicultural heritage.
