Issu d'une famille modeste, il souffre beaucoup de sa situation. Après avoir quitté son Hampshire natal pour Londres, où son père est emprisonné pour dettes, le jeune Charles doit abandonner l'école pour travailler dans une usine de cirage. De ces années, il garde une vision lucide des moeurs et valeurs de la société de son époque qu'il s'emploie à décrire dans ses oeuvres dont les célèbres 'Oliver Twist' (1837-1839) ou 'David Copperfield' (1849-1850).
