Marco Polo, né en 1254 à Venise et mort en 1324 dans la même ville, fut un marchand explorateur italien célèbre pour ses voyages en Extrême-Orient et sa relation ; à 17 ans, il partit avec son père et son oncle pour un périple de 24 ans par la route de la soie, pour atteindre la Chine en 1275. Il y servit 17 ans comme émissaire de l'empereur mongol Khubilaï Khan, parcouru tout son empire et découvrit des régions alors totalement inconnues des Européens. De retour à Venise en 1295, il fut capturé au cours d'un conflit avec Gênes ; en prison, il dicta ses voyages, connus dès lors sous les les trois titres de "Livre de Marco Polo", "Livre des Merveilles" ou "Devisement du Monde" ; son récit mêlant des observations géographiques, culturelles et commerciales, révéla l'Asie lointaine à l'Europe et inspira bien des futurs explorateurs comme Christophe Colomb. Marco Polo mourut en 1324, laissant un héritage majeur dans l'histoire des Grandes Découvertes et des échanges entre l'Orient et l'Occident.
