Durkheim est sans doute, de tous les sociologues classiques, celui qui reste le plus présent dans la sociologie contemporaine. Cela constitue une sorte de paradoxe. Conservateur, voyant dans le socialisme plutôt une conséquence des dérèglements engendrés par l'évolution des sociétés modernes qu'un remède possible à leurs maux, convaincu que l'individu ne peut être heureux que dans une société qui lui impose normes et contraintes, Durkheim n'est guère au goût du temps. Pourtant, le visage qu'il donna à la sociologie, la méthodologie qu'il élabora sont aujourd'hui revendiqués par la communauté scientifique des sociologues comme un bien commun. S'il n'échappa pas complètement à l'esprit de système, il démontra, peut-être le premier avec une telle force, que la sociologie pouvait être une science positive.
