Franz Liszt (1811-1886) war ein österreichisch-ungarischer Komponist, Pianist, Dirigent, Theaterleiter, Musiklehrer und Schriftsteller mit deutscher Muttersprache. Liszt war ein prominenter und einflussreicher Klaviervirtuose und mit einem uvre von über 1300 Werken und Bearbeitungen zugleich einer der produktivsten Komponisten des 19. Jahrhunderts. Ein großer Teil seines Gesamtwerkes ist der Klavierliteratur zuzuordnen. Liszt gab mit der Entwicklung der Sinfonischen Dichtung auch in der orchestralen Musik deutliche Impulse. Sein Konzept der Programmmusik und die Verwendung neuartiger harmonischer und formaler Mittel machten ihn - neben Richard Wagner - zum bekanntesten Protagonisten der Neudeutschen Schule.
