Teaching literature in school has been the subject of intense debate among scholars in the field. Questions such as: Why study literature in school? What is the purpose of literature? Can literature be taught? have been debated, but are still far from reaching a consensus. In this sense, this book aims to develop a study of the Gestar II Program in the area of Portuguese Language, with the intention of understanding the place of literature in a federal program for continuing teacher education. The study begins with an analysis of the printed teaching materials used during the training course, particularly the Theory and Practice Workbooks. It seeks to understand the concepts of literature as a form of art and knowledge conveyed in definitions and conceptualizations, as well as in the proposed reading activities. To this end, it contemplates the process of schooling in literature. The research notes the need to rethink the ways in which literature is appropriated by schools in a context marked by social and cultural transformations.
