Émile Zola (1840-1902) est l'un des écrivains les plus marquants du XIXe siècle et le chef de file du naturalisme. Né à Paris mais ayant grandi à Aix-en-Provence, il connaît une jeunesse marquée par des difficultés financières après la mort prématurée de son père. Il se tourne vers le journalisme et la critique avant de s'imposer comme romancier. Son grand projet, Les Rougon-Macquart, composé de vingt volumes publiés entre 1871 et 1893, se présente comme une vaste enquête sociale, historique et biologique sur une famille durant le Second Empire.
