Long Stories Shortened is a collection of short stories and vignettes; largely about growing up in South Winnipeg in the 1960s and 1970s, but also the author's escapades as a kid and teenager, and his life as a communications professional, photographer, husband, father and musician. Long ago memories are brought to life with poignancy, humour, insight and charm! "Bill Peters asked me to write an offhanded, maybe even funny blurb for this book, but I'm not playing along - because I'm moved by these fragments of memory, and I admire his writing. His nostalgia is almost secretively ethical; his memories of place and characters are far more insightful and historically significant than he's letting on. I'm sorry, Bill. This is a really good book." -Margaret Sweatman, author of The Gunsmith's Daughter, is lucky to count herself among Bill's neighbours. "Bill's creative writing talents were obvious even at a young age. I highly recommend this book to anyone who experienced suburban 1970s in Winnipeg. You'll immediately identify with many of his stories!" -John Matthews, Bill's grade 8-9 Language Arts teacher "We gratefully accept Mr. Peters' offer to donate the profits of this book to St. Amant Foundation. His fond memories of the Riel neighbourhood, of which St. Amant is a cornerstone, are thoughtfully expressed and poignant, and his generosity is sincerely appreciated!" -Tania Douglas, Executive Director, St. Amant Foundation
Autorenporträt
Bill Peters is an award-winning corporate communicator by profession; husband and father by passion; a biker, car guy, rock drummer, hockey, baseball, soccer and dance dad; and in his retirement apparently an author. He is a lifelong Winnipegger, save for a two-year stint in the homeland of the Peters family, Winkler, Manitoba. He contends he was sent back to Winnipeg because he didn't marry, citing "too many cousins". Bill says a side benefit of marrying his Greek-born wife Roula is that it freshened his Mennonite gene pool, which produced two beautiful kids. He adds, "I'm the only one without a degree in my family. I'm amazed they still ask me for advice. I watch home improvement shows and sports while they watch CNN. That should tell you all you need to know." Long Stories Shortened is a compilation of over 100 amusing, sometimes poignant stories which were initially intended to pass down to his children. Encouragement from friends, family, and a healthy Facebook following has resulted in this book.
