Autorenporträt
Joyce Kilmer (1886-1918) was an American writer and poet who is predominantly remembered for his lyrical poetry celebrating the natural world. Born in New Brunswick, New Jersey, Kilmer was prolific in his short life, contributing essays and reviews to various publications while crafting a significant body of poetic work. His writing is frequently characterized by a simple, clear style, and a deep appreciation of the divine as reflected in nature, a theme poignantly encapsulated in his renowned poem 'Trees,' which appeared in the 1914 collection 'Trees and Other Poems.' Although less widely discussed, Kilmer's 'Main Street, and Other Poems' further showcases his latent lyrical talent, capturing the American spirit of the early 20th century and cementing his place amongst the notable poets of his time. Kilmer's literary output was cut tragically short when he died in battle during World War I at the age of 31. He is remembered as a man whose devout Catholic faith and love for the simplicity of natural beauty bled into his work, creating a canon that, while limited by his premature death, endures in the annals of American poetry.
