French Symbolist poet Stéphane Mallarmé (1842-1898) was influenced by his contemporaries, Charles Baudelaire and Paul Verlaine, and was recognized as one of the most eminent poets of his time. His poem, L'Après-midi d'un faune ("The Afternoon of a Faun"), inspired Claude Debussy to compose his well-loved prelude which then in turn, with Mallarmé's poem, inspired Nijinsky's ballet of the same name. Jack Hirschman (born December 13, 1933) is an American poet and social activist who has written and translated more than 100 volumes of poetry and essays. He has translated poetry from many languages and has had his own work translated by others. He was San Francisco Poet Laureate, and still lives in San Francisco.
