Jane's Pearl is a tender, beautifully written family memoir that celebrates the extraordinary life of Vera Wallace, a woman whose story carries the rhythm of music, memory, and resilience. Born in 1922 and raised in the Jamaican countryside, Vera was the youngest of four spirited girls who grew up under the watchful eye of their grandmother, Mama Jane. Playful and beautiful, Vera earned the nickname "Mama Jane's Pearl" from her sister Lela - a name that reflected both her sparkle and her grandmother's deep affection. Through the voices of her sisters, her daughter Flora, and others who knew her best, Mama Jane's Pearl captures the joys, struggles, and changing times of the 1920s through the 1940s in Jamaica. It is a story of family bonds, faith, superstition, and the traditions that shaped a community. Vera loved music, dancing, and performing, and in another life might have been a star of the silver screen. Yet her true stage was the heart of her family, where her laughter, determination, and grace left an indelible mark on everyone she touched. This keepsake hardcover edition of Mama Jane's Pearl features a beautifully designed dust jacket with a classic case design beneath. More than a biography, it is a tender, nostalgic portrait of Vera Wallace-"Mama Jane's Pearl"-told through the voices of those who knew her best. Perfect for collectors, family libraries, or as a cherished gift, this special edition celebrates the life, grace, and enduring memory of a remarkable woman.
Autorenporträt
Gregory McEwan was born in Jamaica and spent much of his early childhood with his grandmother, Vera Wallace - known lovingly as "Granny." Their close bond left a profound mark on his life and writing. At age ten, Gregory moved to Canada, but the nostalgia of those years drew him back to Jamaica again and again, especially to visit Granny. She travelled to Canada several times during her life, but in her final years, when she could no longer make the journey, Gregory returned to Jamaica to be with her and record her memories firsthand.Mama Jane's Pearl is both a biography and a tribute - a way of preserving Granny's voice and legacy for generations to come. Beyond this work, Gregory is the author of I Am Kairu, the Clayton Muttler Detective Series, and The Immortal War Saga. He is also the founder of Revilo Press, an imprint dedicated to publishing stories that honour history, imagination, and family.
