It is found from south-eastern Texas to Arizona southward to Panama. Adults are on wing from mid-April to mid-October, probably in several generations. The species name is derived from the Latin for fish (Piscis) and jaw (mala) and refers to the fish-jaw like appearance of the male valva.A moth is an insect closely related to the butterfly, both being of the order Lepidoptera. Moths form the majority of this order; there are thought to be 150,000 to 250,000 different species of moth (about ten times the number of species of butterfly), with thousands of species yet to be described.
